Terahertz Sensing Technology: Emerging scientific applications & novel device concepts PDF
By:Dwight L. Woolard,William R. Loerop,Michael Shur
Published on 2004 by World Scientific

The last research frontier in high frequency electronics lies in the so-called terahertz (or submillimeter wave) regime, between the traditional microwave and the infrared domains. Significant scientific and technical challenges within the terahertz (THz) frequency regime have recently motivated an array of new research activities. During the last few years, major research programs have emerged that are focused on advancing the state of the art in THz frequency electronic technology and on investigating novel applications of THz frequency sensing. This book provides a detailed review of the new THz frequency technological developments that are emerging across a wide spectrum of sensing and technology areas.Volume II presents cutting edge results in two primary areas: (1) research that is attempting to establish THz-frequency sensing as a new characterization tool for chemical, biological and semiconductor materials, and (2) theoretical and experimental efforts to define new device concepts within the ?THz gap?.

LooseLeaf for Math in Our World: A Quantitative Reasoning Approach PDF
By:David Sobecki,Brian Mercer
Published on 2016-12-13 by McGraw-Hill Education

What does quantitative reasoning really mean? Is it just liberal arts math with a new name on the cover of the book? We say that it is not. It’s about students productively struggling with context-based problems. It’s not just learning how to do math problems, but more importantly learning how quantitative thinking is applied throughout the curriculum, and throughout a lifetime.

Book The Mollification Method and the Numerical Solution of Ill-Posed Problems PDF Free

The Mollification Method and the Numerical Solution of Ill-Posed Problems PDF
By:Diego A. Murio
Published on 1993-07-30 by John Wiley & Sons

Over the past twenty years, the subject of applied inverse theory (ill-posed problems) has expanded from a collection of individual techniques to a rich, highly developed branch of applied mathematics. The Mollification Method and the Numerical Solution of Ill-Posed Problems offers a self-contained introduction to several of the most important practical computational methods that have been successfully applied to a wide range of ill-posed problems. The book examines the mollification method and its multiple applications when used as a space marching method. These computations are compared with various other methods used to arrive at the same numerical results. Of special interest is a novel treatment of the two-dimensional inverse heat conduction problem on a bounded domain. There is a strong emphasis on computation, supplemented by numerous exercises, examples, and illustrations. Unlike most books on ill-posed problems, this volume contains all the motivations, proofs, algorithms, and exercises necessary to fully understand the subject. Materials are presented in clear simple language to make the subject accessible to readers with little or no background in ill-posed problems. For nonmathematicians, an overview of essential mathematical tools is contained in an appendix. References at the end of each chapter are supplemented with comments by the author, and a second appendix offers up-to-date citings of literature on the inverse heat conduction problem to aid readers in further research. An excellent text for upper-level undergraduate or first-year graduate courses on computational methods for inverse ill-posed problems, this book will also serve as a valuable reference work for professionals interested in modeling inverse phenomena.

Worldviews PDF
By:Richard DeWitt
Published on 2018-04-16 by John Wiley & Sons

PRAISE FOR PREVIOUS EDITIONS |This is a brilliantly clear introduction (and indeed reframing) of the history and philosophy of science in terms of worldviews and their elements…. In addition, the book is incredibly well-informed from both a scientific and philosophical angle. Highly recommended.| Scientific and Medical Network |Unlike many other introductions to philosophy of science, DeWitt's book is at once historically informative and philosophically thorough and rigorous. Chapter notes, suggested readings, and references enhance its value.| Choice |Written in clear and comprehensible prose and supplemented by effective diagrams and examples, Worldviews is an ideal text for anyone new to the history and philosophy of science. As the reader will come to find out, DeWitt is a gifted writer with the unique ability to break down complex and technical concepts into digestible parts, making Worldviews a welcoming and not overwhelming book for the introductory reader.| History and Philosophy of the Life Sciences, vol. 28(2) Now in its third edition, Worldviews: An Introduction to the History and Philosophy of Science strengthens its reputation as the most accessible and teachable introduction to the history and philosophy of science on the market. Geared toward engaging undergraduates and those approaching the history and philosophy of science for the first time, this intellectually-provocative volume takes advantage of its author's extensive teaching experience, parsing complex ideas using straightforward and sensible examples drawn from the physical sciences. Building on the foundations which earned the book its critical acclaim, author Richard DeWitt considers fundamental issues in the philosophy of science through the historical worldviews that influenced them, charting the evolution of Western science through the rise and fall of dominant systems of thought. Chapters have been updated to include discussion of recent findings in quantum theory, general relativity, and evolutionary theory, and two new chapters exclusive to the third edition enrich its engagement with radical developments in contemporary science. At a time in modern history when the nature of truth, fact, and reality seem increasingly controversial, the third edition of Worldviews presents complex concepts with clarity and verve, and prepares inquisitive minds to engage critically with some of the most exciting questions in the philosophy of science.

Book Recent Developments in Surface Acoustic Waves PDF Free

Recent Developments in Surface Acoustic Waves PDF
By:David Parker,Gerard A. Maugin
Published on 2012-12-06 by Springer Science & Business Media

The topic of surface waves lies at the interface between a number of disci plines - physics, theoretical and applied mechanics, electroacoustics, ap plied mathematics, surface science and seismology. This volume, based on papers delivered at European Mechanics Colloquium 226, reflects this diversity in approach and background, while showing strong links between phenomena arising from different fields. The emphasis is on recent de velopments such as nonlinear and other nonclassical effects, which have great importance for both pure science and for applications such as signal processing, nondestructive evaluation and seismic studies. In recent years there has been considerable progress in the mathe matical treatment of nonlinear effects, of viscoelastic and of more novel constitutive effects which modify the predictions of linear elastic and piezo electric theory for surface acoustic wave (SAW) propagation. A number of these themes serve to group the contents of this volume. Part I contains recent advances in the rigorous mathematical treatment of nonlinearity, together with a paper giving experimental results showing the need for further theoretical development. Part II deals with anisotropic elasticity, showing that even the linear theory presents many possible behaviours, which are still not fully categorized.

Published on 2015-10-22 by World Scientific

This book shows, for the very first time, how love stories — a vital issue in our lives — can be tentatively described with classical mathematics. Focus is on the derivation and analysis of reliable models that allow one to formally describe the expected evolution of love affairs from the initial state of indifference to the final romantic regime. The models are in full agreement with the basic philosophical principles of love psychology. Eight chapters are theoretically oriented and discuss the romantic relationships between important classes of individuals identified by particular psychological traits. The remaining chapters are devoted to case studies described in classical poems or in worldwide famous films. Contents:Can We Model Love Stories?Simple Models:Linear Models and Their PropertiesCouples Composed of Secure and Unbiased IndividualsRoxane and CyranoThe Discovery of Hidden Components of the AppealCouples Composed of Insecure and Unbiased IndividualsScarlett and RhettRomantic CyclesKathe and JulesKathe and JimComplex Models:Environmental Stress and Romantic ChaosExtra Emotional DimensionsLaura and FrancescoTriangular Love Stories and UnpredictabilityKathe, Jules, and Jim Readership: Undergraduate and graduate students, researchers and academics in applied mathematics; systems analysts, theoretical psychologists and social scientists. Key Features:First book ever on the mathematical treatment of the evolution of love affairsShows how mathematics can be used with the modeling approach to deal with artistic issues concerning loveUnique from the very few publications on the topic — the elegant jargon typical of social sciences as well as the hermetic formalism of mathematics are strictly avoidedKeywords:Mathematical Modeling;Nonlinear Dynamics;Interpersonal Relationships;Sociology;Psychology |It was certainly not an easy task to write for applied mathematicians and for sociologists and psychologists at the same time, but the authors succeeded in satisfying both sides of the spectrum. The result is a well organized and easily understandable book that I read with great pleasure, not only because of its content but also for its wonderful outlay. A series of pictures showing famous heroes and interesting stories illustrate love affairs in a nice manner.| Gustav Feichtinger University of Technology, Vienna

Book Non-Local Partial Differential Equations for Engineering and Biology PDF Free

Non-Local Partial Differential Equations for Engineering and Biology PDF
By:Nikos I. Kavallaris,Takashi Suzuki
Published on 2017-11-28 by Springer

This book presents new developments in non-local mathematical modeling and mathematical analysis on the behavior of solutions with novel technical tools. Theoretical backgrounds in mechanics, thermo-dynamics, game theory, and theoretical biology are examined in details. It starts off with a review and summary of the basic ideas of mathematical modeling frequently used in the sciences and engineering. The authors then employ a number of models in bio-science and material science to demonstrate applications, and provide recent advanced studies, both on deterministic non-local partial differential equations and on some of their stochastic counterparts used in engineering. Mathematical models applied in engineering, chemistry, and biology are subject to conservation laws. For instance, decrease or increase in thermodynamic quantities and non-local partial differential equations, associated with the conserved physical quantities as parameters. These present novel mathematical objects are engaged with rich mathematical structures, in accordance with the interactions between species or individuals, self-organization, pattern formation, hysteresis. These models are based on various laws of physics, such as mechanics of continuum, electro-magnetic theory, and thermodynamics. This is why many areas of mathematics, calculus of variation, dynamical systems, integrable systems, blow-up analysis, and energy methods are indispensable in understanding and analyzing these phenomena. This book aims for researchers and upper grade students in mathematics, engineering, physics, economics, and biology.
